You gotta give Tubby credit, he could sell a 78 Pinto to the barners and convince them it was a $200,000 John Deere tractor.
Let's recap the recruiting year for Tubby and the barners. As the 2008 class wound to a close, Saban was just crushing Tubby in-state, and the barners had begun to privately wring their hands and worry over what the future held.
But Tubby was there to allay their fears and give them an explanation/spin they could buy into. He explained aubarn's horrible recruiting class by explaining that 'we don't recruit stars, we recruit character'.
And NOW the barners had a spin they could hang their overalls on! Of course they didn't stop to realize that since Tubby recruited and offered almost every kid that Bama signed, that he was actually complimenting Bama's class.
So what does Tubby do for the 2009 class? He immediately starts taking commits from any 2-star that will accept an offer from aubarn. Now every year aubarn has had 2-stars that want to commit to them early, but Tubby has never accepted them, until NOW. Anyone wonder why?
So the end result has been, Tubby is stockpiling 2-stars like nobody's business, and now has 20 commits. The media is all gushing about aubarn's 'fast start', and how Saban has 'lit a fire under Tuberville'.
Wait....did I miss something, or all these still all 2-stars that aubarn beat out Troy and Middle Tennessee State for? Ah but I forget the Tubby snake-oil......he told us earlier this year that 'we don't recruit stars, we recruit character'.
So of course! Stars are MEANINGLESS now! Brilliant! And of course, the barners are completely in tow with this. How many times in the past few months have we suddenly heard from the pastures to the East that 'stars don't matter?' Of course, these same barners were laughing at Shula for beating out Middle Tennessee State and Troy for players a couple of years ago. Now signing 2-stars that no one wanted is a badge of honor!
Again, gotta give Tubby credit! He knows what mindless lemmings the barners are, and that they just want to be fed a somewhat believable line of BS, and they will wolf it down!
So what happens when Bama signs another solid Top 10 class and aubarn struggles to again stay Top 25? Of course it won't matter, because as Tubby told us, 'we don't recruit stars'. BTW does this mean they DID recruit stars from 1999-2007?
And what's really going to be fun is when aubarn starts running out of slots. If that happens and by some miracle a 3 or 4-star wants to commit to aubarn, expect one of aubarn's many 2-stars to suddenly have their offer pulled, so that Tubby can make room.
So really, it's a win-win for Tubby. Either way, he signs a big class, and much sooner than normal. If he holds with about 20 2-stars, and 10 3-stars, he'll be lucky to finish Top 25. Of course he can again say 'we don't recruit stars', and the barners will cheer madly. And if he slips up and gets a stud or two (and he probably will, after all he can sell BS to recruits as well as fans), then the barners will suddenly start cheering about the 'stars' of their recruits.
But the REAL fun comes in a couple of years when the 2008 and 2009 classes are called upon as 2-star junior and seniors to play Bama's 4 and 5-star upperclassmen. I think Tubby plans on being LONG gone before he has to deal with that mess.
