Here are a few nuggets as we begin the homestretch of recruiting season:
• Still no word on the status of Kerry Murphy, who contains to await word from the NCAA Clearinghouse. Classes started at Alabama on Wednesday, but students can still enroll for the spring without penalty as late as Jan. 14. If and/or when Murphy is cleared, he'll join the team with an eye toward replacing All-American Terrence Cody after the 2009 season.
• With only nine seniors and two NFL draft early entries the only players who have officially left the program, Alabama should be at around 77-78 scholarship players for the spring (three players — James Carpenter, Chance Warmack and Jermaine Preyear — have joined the program, and Murphy might still do so). Alabama is intent on signing around 27 players for its 2009 signing class, meaning upwards of a dozen current scholarship players will have to leave the program before fall camp begins.
One player to keep an eye on is Terry Grant...
