When star offensive tackle Andre Smith went down clutching his right knee during the third quarter of Alabama's win over Clemson last Saturday, coach Nick Saban knew the plan.
So did Antoine Caldwell and Mike Johnson. But no one ever clued in David Ross that he would be the one to take Smith's place in the lineup until he got the signal from offensive line coach Joe Pendry and ran onto the field.
