Alabama has already made two better and more experienced quarterbacks – Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett and Ole Miss’ Jevan Snead – look downright pitiful this season. Sure, Tennessee’s Jonathan Crompton didn’t fare too badly against Alabama’s defense two weeks ago, but that was also a defense that was, as Tide head coach Nick Saban pointed out, mentally and physically drained after having battled SEC competition five consecutive weeks.
Alabama is ready and rested now.
That’s bad news for Jefferson, LSU’s young gun behind center.
Why? To put it plainly, LSU can’t protect the sophomore signal-caller who has a total of 10 starts under his belt. The Tigers rank next-to-last in the SEC in sacks given up this season with Jefferson having been mashed into the turf 23 times. The Georgia defense, just middle-of-the-pack in the SEC in terms of producing sacks, dumped Jefferson six times.
A lot of it has to do with the fact that LSU is breaking in two new starters on its offensive line this season – center Bob Hebert and left guard Josh Dworaczyk, both sophomores.
Meanwhile, Alabama has been burying quarterbacks better than anyone else in the SEC all season long. Well, actually, the Tide is tied for first in the league in sacks with 23 in eight games. Ole Miss and Florida also have 23 sacks apiece.
Sounds like Jefferson may be getting a few grass stains on his white jersey come Saturday.
