Alabama's Kent Matthes was doubly honored on Monday, being named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and as one of five Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

The senior right fielder hit .562 (9-for-16) with four home runs and 13 RBI in four games last week, all Crimson Tide wins. He has homered in five straight games dating back to last Sunday, tying a school record.

“It’s an honor for me and it was a great week for our team,” Matthes said Monday afternoon. “It is always great to be recognized. It is a real honor for me.”

For the season, Matthes is hitting .481 with six homers and 15 runs batted in. The Orlando, Fla., native also has a team-high 11 runs scored and four stolen bases in as many attempts.

Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball also honored four pitchers — Southern Arkansas' Hayden Simpson, San Diego State's Stephen Strasburg, Rice's Ryan Berry and Texas' Brandon Workman — along with Matthes. LSU's Austin Ross was named SEC Pitcher of the Week, while Vanderbilt catcher Aaron Westlake was tabbed the league's top freshman.

Alabama is back in action on Tuesday at Troy. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
