Alabama has hired Carolina Panthers defensive line coach Sal Sunseri to fill one of two vacancies on the defensive staff, a source with knowledge of the situation told Crimson Confidential on Monday.
The 49-year-old Sunseri coached under Nick Saban at LSU in 2000 and also under current Tide assistant Bobby Williams at Michigan State in 2001. He has been defensive line coach with the Panthers since 2002.

Alabama has two staff openings after head defensive coach/inside linebackers coach Kevin Steele left for Clemson and outside linebackers coach Lance Thompson departed for Tennessee. Which slot Sunseri was set to fill was not immediately known.

An All-America linebacker at Pittsburgh in 1981, Sunseri also has coaching experience at Pittsburgh (1985-92), Iowa Wesleyan (1993), Illinois State (1994), Louisville (1995-97) and Alabama A&M (1998-99).
