While Bama’s bye week Saturday means extra recruiting time for coaches and extra rest and family time for the players, it means extra time in front of the tube for Tide fans. Four big games, in particular, will have my attention.
Ole Miss at Auburn, 11:21 a.m., SEC Network – Never understood the mentality of some Bama fans who say they pull for Auburn whenever it’s not playing Alabama. Auburn is the bad guy – every weekend. The more the Tigers lose the better it is for Bama’s in-state recruiting efforts. Not that Alabama needs any help on the recruiting trail, but, hey, a downward spiraling Auburn program doesn’t hurt. Plus, an Auburn loss always means less chirping by all the orange-and-blue clad folks. And that’s a good thing. Here’s hoping Jevan Snead and Co., pile up the points down on the Plains.
Florida vs. Georgia, 2:30 p.m. CBS – Let the top-ranked Gators keep getting by. There’s really no point in Bama fans pulling against Florida right now. Seriously, what good would a Florida loss do? Sure, Alabama would ascend to No. 1 in the BCS but that means nothing at this point in the season. As long as you control your own destiny in the BCS, you’re fine, and at No. 2, Alabama certainly does that. Imagine the hype for an undefeated Florida team facing an undefeated Alabama team in the SEC Championship Game. And then go one step further – imagine an undefeated Alabama team beating an undefeated and top-ranked Florida team. If Florida needs to get exposed, wouldn’t it be best if it was Alabama doing the exposing on the biggest national stage possible?
Texas at Oklahoma State, 7 p.m., ABC or ESPN2 – An Alabama-Texas showdown in the BCS title game would be fantastic. Shoot, the two college football powerhouses haven’t met since the ’82 Cotton Bowl, so a match-up between the Tide and Longhorns is way overdue.
