Alabama remained No. 1 in the USA Today/USFA softball rankings released Tuesday, giving the Crimson Tide a rare opportunity on Friday.
Washington is No. 1 in the ESPN/USA Softball rankings, and the two teams meet on Friday in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide will host Washington, Baylor and Georgia for the SEC/Pac-10/Big 12 Challenge this weekend at the Alabama softball complex.

“To my knowledge this is the first time the number one team in each pole has played each other,” Alabama coach Patrick Murphy said. “This is a big honor for all the players and the fans involved in the event. We all look forward to hosting a great tournament this weekend.”

Alabama (13-1) received 14 first-place votes and 653 poll points in the USA Today/USFA rankings, followed by Florida (4, 644) and Washington (9, 630). Missouri is No. 12 in that poll.

In the ESPN/USA Softball rankings, Washington (17-0) got 19 first-place votes and 499 points, ahead of Florida and UCLA. Alabama, ranked No. 4, got the other first-place vote.

Before hosting the SEC/Pac-10/Big 12 Challenge, the Crimson Tide will face UAB at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Alabama Softball Complex.
