Most teachers know about the three R’s – reading, riting and rithmatic. Shelly Green, a pre-kindergarten teacher in Talladega, likes to add one more R in her class – Roll Tide. Abigail Parton, one of her students last year, learned that Roll Tide lesson well.

Of course, Abigail’s mom, Maria, has helped out, too, with a little Roll Tide home-schooling, which is only natural, of course, since Maria grew up a Crimson Tide fan. Maria also was kind enough to serve as Abigail’s spokesperson for this interview.

So meet Friday’s Fan of the Week – 6-year-old Abigail Parton. And, if you like to go to Alabama baseball games, keep an eye out for her. She’ll be the one yelling, ‘Roll Tide!’

Name: Abigail Parton

Age: 6

Hometown: Talladega

Occupation: kindergartener

Who is her favorite Alabama baseball player: “She likes Alex Kubal and Austin (Hyatt). She doesn’t really have a reason for liking those particular players. She just loves men. She’s not choosy. She’s just a huge flirt.”

How did she become an Alabama fan: “Ms. Shelly took her and another little boy to an Alabama baseball game last spring. It was against Auburn, too, and Alabama won, so that was cool. I got to go, too. I grew up in Utah, but I’ve always been an Alabama fan. Anyway, the team has been really, really super with her. They’ve been sending her T-shirts and pictures, and this has been an ongoing thing. Abigail loves it.”

What’s her favorite Alabama outfit: “She has an Alabama cheerleader outfit she likes a lot. Ms. Shelly gave it to her as a pre-school graduation present last year, and she wore it to the baseball game last year and the one game she’s been to so far this year last week. She doesn’t wear it a whole lot because she doesn’t want to mess it up.”

When did she learn to say ‘Roll Tide’: “She’ll tell you right away, ‘We don’t like Auburn. Roll Tide!’ She’s been saying ‘Roll Tide’ since before she was 2 years old. She couldn’t say it real well at first, but you knew what she was saying.”

Does she want to play sports for Alabama when she grows up: “I really don’t know. She seems like she has athletic tendencies, but she hasn’t mentioned anything yet. I think she just likes being a fan right now. I am hoping she’ll be an athlete, though, because I never was. She’s in ballet right now.”
